In the Same Breath
Video Installation with Scent, 2018
By Joële Walinga and Alicia Nauta

In the Same Breath investigates the transference of memory from one living thing to another, and seeks to find the location of memory. In the Same Breath uses silent video to document Walinga and Nauta speaking their most intimate memories to plants, who science suggests can absorb and be informed by energy and sound waves. Exploring the possibility that plants can retain memory and hold emotions, cuttings from these plants are then taken and distilled, creating an olfactory account of the memory as it was understood and remembered by the plant. Silent videos are screened alongside their accompanying scents.
